Mercedes COMAND head Units – How to identify yours
This article will help your identify what version or Mercedes COMAND head unit you have on your car. We start with a very small overview of what is the COMAND system and then we jump right into the different COMAND versions and what’s unique to each and how to identify yours.
You can use the Contents section below to go straight to the section of interest to you, if you’re pressed on time.
Mercedes introduced their Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) back in 1998 for their top-of-the-line S-class model. A management system allowed users to control their vehicle’s functionality from the centre console. Using the D2B (Domestic Digital Bus) optical network, allowed controls for everything from vehicle navigation to radio.
The COMAND system was later upgraded to MOST bus giving it a new look and a new name. Now called the COMAND APS NTG, the new system became the standard in-car infotainment system in all Mercedes. And it remained so till 2018.
Within these years, Mercedes has launched over 13 iterations of the COMAND APS system. And while each is named differently, there isn’t much to differentiate directly. With one version looking almost the same as the other, it is hard to differentiate between two COMAND APS NTGs.
That’s why in this article, we will tell you about the different methods to identify COMAND head units, so you can locate yours.

Identify your Mercedes COMAND by the look of the unit
Most of the time you can also tell what version of Mercedes COMAND unit you have by the look of the module.
First Generation COMAND units:
- Mercedes COMAND 2.5

- Mercedes COMAND 2.0

- Mercedes COMAND 2.5 MOPF

Second Generation COMAND units:
- Mercedes COMAND APS NTG 1

- Mercedes COMAND APS NTG 2

COMAND NTG 2.0 is identical to NTG 1 however there is one major difference. The DVD-based Navigation in COMAND NTG 2.0 is in-built in the head unit whereas the Navigation DVD on NTG 1 is separate from the module located in either boot or trunk of the vehicle.
- Mercedes COMAND APS NTG 3

- Mercedes COMAND APS NTG 3.5

- Mercedes COMAND APS NTG 4

- COMAND APS NTG 2.5

- COMAND APS NTG 4.5/4.7

- COMAND APS NTG 5.1

- COMAND APS NTG 5.2

- COMAND APS NTG 5.5

Identify your Mercedes COMAND using the VIN number
Vehicle Identification Number or VIN is unique number given to each vehicle. Every Mercedes unit produced has its own VIN number that can be put into a decoder to get all necessary info about that particular unit.
Decoding the VIN would give you a list of details that will include everything from the model, engine and transmission numbers to all the codes mentioning different features and options included on that particular vehicle. There are many VIN decoder websites out there, like lastvin or vindecoderz, to give just a few examples.
